Electric powertrains in terms of battery electric vehicles (BEV) are considered to be very interesting for heavy truck transportations. The challenge is the need large onboard energy and batteries. Long-term fuel cells (FCs) an support system heavy-duty BEV, but short term, a range extender (REX) also interesting. A BEV with 970 kWh batteries installed can handle 27% all possible missions Scania fleet considering daily recharging. back-up (BUREX) expand this figure 55% utilized 20 days per year. If customer has few energy-demanding use cases each year does not want pay needed, BUREX may especially good option. reduces life-cycle CO2 emissions, irrespective generation mix grid supplying electricity used vehicle manufacturing charging. reuse existing components powertrain enables installation 10% larger pack while being 80% less costly. adds redundancy concept recharging infrastructure improves, rural places. These results indicate that powerful short-term solution could enable greater HD FC trucks charging technologies gradually become more mature.
